CHICAGO (AFP) — Police were seeking a sheriff's deputy Sunday as the top suspect in a deadly shooting rampage that reportedly left as many as six people dead in a bucolic town in the northern state of Wisconsin.

News reports said the shooting occurred about 3 am (0700 GMT) Sunday in the hamlet of Crandon, Wisconsin, population of about 2,000, not far from the Canada border.

Authorities reportedly had launched a manhunt to try to apprehend the prime suspect, a sheriff's deputy with the Forest County Sheriff's Department who was said to be armed and danger, according to local radio station WTMJ.

The victims were said to be 10 local area youths between the ages of 17 and 20.

Officials said it was not immediately known what sparked this shooting.

"This has been a very tragic evening," said Tom Vollmar, supervisor in Forest County, which includes Crandon, told local radio station WTMJ.

"It's affected probably every family in this community," he said.

Crandon was still in "lockdown" as of mid-morning Sunday, with residents forbidden venturing out on the town's streets, according to WTMJ.

At least five people are said to have died after a gunman opened fire at a house in the Midwestern US state of Wisconsin early on Sunday.

Reports suggest the suspect is a law enforcement officer, and the victims were teenagers or young adults.

The shootings took place in the town of Crandon, in the north of the state.

"It's a pretty tragic situation here," said Forest County Supervisor Tom Vollmar, who lives just outside Crandon, a community of 2,000 people.

"There are five or six people dead," Mr Vollmar said.

Chris Lato, a reporter for local radio station WTMJ AM, told BBC News 24 the suspect was in the county sheriff's department, "effectively a law-enforcer".

"He is still on the loose at this time, and we have heard that he is holed up in a house or cabin," Lato said.

Reports say the shooting occurred shortly before 0300 local time (0800 GMT).

The town was said to be in "lockdown" mode throughout Sunday morning, with residents forbidden to leave their homes as police searched for the suspect.
