When asked what makes the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival special, Ricky Skaggs doesn't hesitate.

"Warren Hellman makes it special."

Each October since 2001, the San Francisco-based investment banker and amateur banjo player has taken over Speedway Meadow in Golden Gate Park for one weekend to throw a blowout party for music lovers on his dime.

What began in 2001 as the one-day, two-stage Strictly Bluegrass Festival now covers three days on five stages. And the festival's musical scope has expanded along with its size, prompting the addition of the word "Hardly" in 2003.

Past years have seen visits from such superstars as Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson and Elvis Costello.

"That's one of the things I love about this festival," says Skaggs, 52, who will be playing in his fifth consecutive festival this year. "You're going to hear hard-core, in-your-face bluegrass when we come out there, but then Elvis Costello can come on."
